BUILDING COMMUNITY

Kiyoshi Taylor is an activist and young leader from Los Altos, California. He has been fighting for justice since leading a march against police brutality in 2015 during his senior year in high school. He has organized educational forums, done extensive community work, and organized scores of protests in the California Bay Area. Some of his accomplishments:

  • In 2020 was honored for his work in race relations and police reform

    • Person of the year, by the Los Altos Town Crier

    • Congressional recognition by the U.S. House of Representatives 

    • Proclamation read by the Mayor of Los Altos

  • In 2015 received the Nelson Mandela Scholar Award for his community work following on the murders of Trayvon Martin, Michael Brown, Tamir Rice, and others ​

  • In 2020, cofounded Justice Vanguard, a nonprofit organization that promotes genuine education and dialogue around race relations (justicevanguard.org)

    • successfully fought for a new ethnic studies history course in the Mountain View / Los Altos high school district (MVLA)

    • successfully orchestrated the removal of School Resource Officers (SROs) in the MVLA and San Jose Unified school districts (SJUSD)

    • drew attention to the need for increasing mental health resources in school and community settings

    • organized and presented educational forums and demonstrations

    • raised funds for scholarships awarded to black students to continue their education after high school

    • conducted workshops for schools, organizations, and businesses

  • Hosted online events that have included the likes of

    • Emory Douglas (Original Black Panther Artist) 

    • Mildred Aristide (Former First Lady of Haiti)

  • Hosted some of the largest events Silicone Valley has ever seen.
